How To Become a Character Rather Than a Delusion

The result of a six-month research residency at MAC - artist’s studios in Padua, the work is composed from two groups of works - a dozen terracotta sculptures and a composition of five of faux leather silhouettes - developed from the frequentation and study of the cycle of Giotto’s frescoes present inside the Scrovegni Chapel.
The orthodox narrative of religious representation is here re-signified through processes of fragmentation, abstraction and recomposition. The creative process extrapolates details of sacred iconography (postures, expressions, props) by reemploying them in an unprecedented ‘crooked’ iconography that critically addresses the theme of immaculate conception in an attempt to visibilize Mary’s latent (and suppressed) frustration.
The resulting apparatus is composed of monstrous yet dreamy figures, whose anthropomorphic character is convulsively contaminated with zoomorphic parts and surreal distortions. The result is a queer mosaic where genres, species, fragments and whole are mixed. The main figures are joined by portions of bodies (limbs, teeth...) that are mutilations and yet, at the same time, new organisms of their own sense.
